Safe Cycling Thunder Bay

Safe Cycling Thunder Bay is a cycling education program run by EcoSuperior, in partnership with the City of Thunder Bay. The goal of the program is to reduce cycling-related injuries by offering cycling courses that help individuals develop the skills and knowledge to ride for commuting and for recreation in a safe way.

Upcoming events:

CAN-BIKE 2: Advanced Cycling Skills (instructor prerequisite)

Friday, Sept. 11, 6-9 pm; Saturday Sept. 12 and Sunday Sept. 13, 8:30 am-4:30 pm.

Canada Games Complex, Community Meeting Room

Interested in teaching cycling safety? Submit a 1-page cover letter to Caroline@EcoSuperior.org detailing why you would like to become a cycling instructor in Thunder Bay, and include any relevant teaching, volunteering, or cycling experience. We particularly encourage 55+ individuals to apply. Application deadline is September 4, and we will continue to accept applications after this date until all spots are filled. Women’s Course

September 12, 9 am-1 pm

Lakehead University, room TBD


A 4-hour course taught by women for women. We want you to feel confident riding your bike. Through classroom, outdoor, and on-road sessions, we will cover cycling in traffic, proper equipment, bike fit, and basic maintenance. Cycling while pregnant and cycling with children will also be discussed. $20. Register at

55+ Course

Monday, Sept 14 & Wednesday, Sept 16, 6-8 pm

55+ Centre

Mature, certified instructors want you to feel confident about your cycling skills, answer your questions, and meet your needs. Through classroom, outdoor, and on-road sessions, participants will develop skills that allow for assertive, safe, and responsible behaviour. The course will teach defensive riding skills, traffic analysis, and collision avoidance techniques. $25. Register in person at the 55+ Centre or by calling 684-3066.

Cycling Skills for Commuters

Monday, Sept 21 & Wednesday, Sept 23, 6-8 pm

Confederation College, room TBD

Everything you need to know about cycling safely and legally in Thunder Bay, from doing a quick bike safety check to riding in traffic. Taught by professional cycling instructors, Cycling Skills for Commuters will build your confidence and help you hone existing skills. Through classroom, outdoor, and on-road sessions, we will cover cycling with traffic, defensive riding skills, proper equipment, bike safety, basic bike maintenance, and bike fit. $20. Winter Cycling Skills
